The Shanghai world financial center is a project invested by morita corporation of Japan and more than 40 companies from Japan and the United States, with a total investment of over 105 billion yen. The original design is 460 meters high, the project area is 30,000 square meters, the total construction area is 381,600 square meters, next to the jinmao tower. Construction began in early 1997 but was halted due to the impact of the Asian financial crisis. Work resumed in February 2003. But both Taipei and Hong Kong were already building 480m skyscrapers, taller than the world financial centre was designed to be. The original design has been revised to reflect Japan's intention to build the world's tallest building. The revised global financial center will have seven floors more than the original one, namely 101 floors above ground and 3 floors underground, with a total floor area of about 377,300 square meters.
